How Parents Can Help Their Children Learn~

Imagine you are starting a new job with very complex skills, a demanding boss, and an all new surroundings. Sounds pretty daunting. Now imagine you can only work on these new skills for an hour a week. Now add to the mix that you are merely a child and have limited life skills. Seems downright impossible, doesn’t it?  Yet that is exactly what parents expect when children are learning to ride horses.

Learning to ride is a complex and difficult process. It takes many, many years to master. How can a parent help their child master those skills without becoming discouraged along the way? Here are some helpful tips-

1. Schedule lessons more often. Riding once per week is the bare minimum in order to advance. Less than once per week will become just like the movie Groundhog’s Day, an oft repeated set of instructions while working on the same skills over and over again. The lessons will become simply recreational riding, not actual lessons. Riding requires creating muscle memory that can only be learned from repetition. Make it possible for your student to ride more often. If cost is a factor, move into less expensive group lessons. Allow the student to take practice rides if the stable offers them. Some facilities offer discounts when lessons are taken more than once per week. Inquire about those programs. Whatever you can do to get the rider on a horse more often will help.

2. Listen to and watch your child’s lesson. Resist the temptations of email, social media and phone calls. Technology is at our fingertips 24/7, but our children grow up and move away before you know it. You paid for the lesson, be a part of it! Learn some new terms. Ask the instructor questions (After the lesson please! When the student is un-tacking is a good time.). Be involved in your child’s instruction.

3. Video the lesson. Use your smart phone to replay the lesson to your child. Visual learners will greatly benefit from seeing themselves ride. They can better identify their weaknesses and strengths. Often students simply don’t believe they really are doing the things the instructor is telling them about. Seeing video evidence will support the instructors point of view, help the student understand the principles being taught, and where the student is falling short.

4. Ask for homework. Ask the instructor for a list of terms to look up and learn. (Use your smart phone to take notes.) Drill students on the parts of the horse, bridle or saddle. Learn the names and uses of grooming tools. Go over a riding principle learned during today’s lesson. Get some stretching or coordination exercises to do at home. Even posting can be practiced in a chair or on an exercise ball. Encourage your child to do some barn homework every day. If the barn offers books, buy them and read them with your child. Otherwise, good information is available on the internet. CRK Stable offers online worksheets for the CHA Manuals. Buy the books, go to http://crktrainingstable.com/study-guides/, enter the password and get busy learning!

5. Review the lesson with your child. When you are back in the car, don’t just tick the lesson off your “to-do” list and focus on the next task at hand. Discuss what the student learned that day. Did the lesson go well? If so, comment on that, “Your posting was much better today!” (Don’t know what posting is? See #2) If the lesson didn’t go well, what did the student struggle with? How can you help them get past that difficulty? Always end the conversation on a good note. Remind them about the things that went well.

6. Review online videos and radio shows. If the barn has videos on their website, review them with your child. The Certified Horsemanship Association produces wonderful, informative videos that are available free on YouTube. Go to- http://www.youtube.com/user/chainstructor for videos or Horse Radio Network for replays of radio shows- http://www.horseradionetwork.com/

Remember, a parents job is to raise our children. Not to simply make learning opportunities available to them. Be as involved in every aspect of their lives as you can. As a parent of grown children I can honestly say I never regretted sitting on cold, hard bleachers for hours on end, watching the hundreds of practices and competitions my children participated in.  Now that those days are long past, I actually miss them…

Hot Weather Reminders~

As we get further into fall, the days will be getting much warmer. Some days will be downright HOT! Lessons will run as usual on hot days, so be prepared. Bring some water and wear a hat while grooming. If you want to reschedule your normal lesson time for a cooler part of the day, please do it well ahead of time. Lessons won’t be rescheduled on the day of the lesson because it is hot. If it’s too hot to ride, we may substitute or you may choose an un-mounted lesson. A favorite on hot days is horse bathing. Just make sure you wear clothes that can get wet!

If your CRK Stable school horse gets sweaty during your lesson, you must either hose or sponge them off. Tack should also be wiped down with a damp towel to remove sweat that can damage the leather. If you don’t know how to do these tasks, please ask. We will make sure it’s included in your next lesson.

Please remember correct riding attire, including a sleeved shirt. Tank tops and spaghetti strap shirts are not allowed. If you are not wearing proper attire, you will not be allowed to ride. Closed shoes are also required in the barn areas. This rule applies to everyone, parents included! If you forgot to change out of your flip-flops, please remain in the spectator areas. For more information about riding attire click here-http://crktrainingstable.com/lesson-program/required-riding-attire/

YLCR Horse Show~

This year’s annual Yorba Linda Country Riders show was loads of fun! We had several CRK riders compete this year. Maggie made the trip for the first time and was she a trouper! She was a bit excited in the morning, but quickly settled and was a winning mount for both Suze Carragher and Kate Clifton. Suze & Maggie competed in 3 events taking home 2 firsts and a 3rd. This was good enough to give them the Overall Highpoint for their division! Kate then took up Maggie’s reins for the Leadline class and was also awarded first place!

Our very own instructor, Athena Fosnight, took her baby boy, Cruiser, and competed in the English division. They took home several first and second place ribbons. Their placings were good enough to earn them the Reserve Champion award for the day.

Excellent job everyone! Thanks for making CRK look so good!

Hot Weather Reminders~

As we get further into summer, the days will be getting much warmer.

If your CRK Stable school horse gets sweaty during your lesson, you will be asked to either hose or sponge them off. Tack should also be wiped down to remove sweat that can damage the leather. If you don’t know how to do these tasks, please ask. We will make sure it’s part of your next lesson.

Please remember that all riders must wear a sleeved shirt. If you arrive for your lesson wearing a tank top, you will not be allowed to ride. Closed shoes are also required in the barn areas. This rule applies to everyone, parents included! If you forgot to change out of your flip-flops, for your own safety, please remain in the patio area. Thank You!

 YLCR Horse Show~

Every year our local riding club offers a horse show. It is open to all levels of riders with classes ranging from the un-mounted Halter and Showmanship classes to riding classes such as- Walk/Trot  and Walk/Trot/ Canter equitation and pleasure.

If you would like to borrow a CRK horse for the day and attend the show, we would be happy to help you out!. This year’s show will be held on Sunday, July 12, 2015. Transportation to the show is available, along with coaching, and all the tack you need. You will need to provide your own show attire.

Just let us know if you would like to compete, or just ask for more information. We are happy to help!

Why were lessons cancelled today? The weather was beautiful!

We know you are excited to ride and are disappointed if lessons are cancelled. When we cancel lessons it is always for the safety of our riders. Trust me when I say that we would much rather be working and making the money it takes to keep the barn operating!  The horses eat, drink and need new shoes even if the wind is blowing or it’s raining.

Here in Orange County we are often subjected to Santa Ana Winds. These winds make our horses agitated and unpredictable.  Also, when the wind is blowing the students simply can’t hear our instructions making lessons difficult at best and perhaps even downright unsafe. Even the staff doesn’t ride their own fully trained horses in the wind. It’s simply not safe.

The weather at CRK Training Stable is usually different from other parts of Orange County or even Yorba Linda. Due to our closeness to the hills, the wind always seems to hit us harder and longer than anywhere else.  We will usually cancel lessons for the entire day because we simply don’t know when or if the wind will stop trying to blow us off the map. Even if the weather is good at the time of your lesson, many days of wind previously may have prevented us from working the horses enough so they are ready for our riders. For more information about how wind affects horses please read- http://crktrainingstable.com/?s=blow+hard

When the rain comes, everyone understands that they don’t ride in the rain. What people often don’t understand is that the arena will be too wet to use for many days after the rain stops. The pounding rain also packs the arena’s sand footing, making it very hard. Once the arena has dried out, we must rake the sand footing with the tractor to fluff it up so it is soft and safe for the horses to work on. This process may take several hours to complete and only then will the arena be usable again.

When it is raining or the wind is blowing, the horses must stay in their stalls. Our horses are healthy and fit. They are used to getting worked daily. When the horses have been kept confined for several days, they will have lots of built-up energy. This needs to be worked out before the horses can be safely ridden, especially for novice riders. Therefore; we need time to get the horses worked and ready for our students. With 4-5 horses this easily takes 4-5 hours to accomplish. Therefore, it can take up to a full day after the arena is dry and raked before lessons can resume. We won’t rush back into lessons just to make money. Your safety is much more important.

Hopefully now you have a better understanding as to why lessons are cancelled when the weather is beautiful. We don’t cancel lessons because we wish to inconvenience you or your student. We are simply doing what’s best to keep everyone safe and having wonderful riding experiences.

Welcome!

CRK Training Stable is pleased to welcome the following new riders who joined us in January and February- Mada, Majd, Han, Emma, Madison, Alan, Alex, Debbie, Bella, Olivia, Maggie, Cameron, Rachael, Ellen, Sarah , Catherine, Prince, August, Kelly and returning after spending some time abroad- Raul.
As you can see, we are getting busy! Please plan ahead when scheduling your lessons. We may not be able to accommodate changes easily.

Horse Expo Pomona~

All things horse invaded Pomona January 30-February 1, 2015. Athena, Cheryl, Suze and Penny all attended on Friday. We very much enjoyed listening to Julie Goodnight while our very own Suze Carragher and Penny were demonstration riders. The rain held off so Suze & Penny stayed dry and had a fantastic ride!  Penny was a trooper, taking all the people, horses, grandstands, loud speakers and associated madness in stride.             After the demonstration,  Suze stayed with Penny while Athena & Cheryl made the rounds. They talked with lots of vendors, learning about new products and innovations. They also met up with many old friends and made some new ones. Things were purchased and presentations were attended. Overall a good time was had by all. Even Penny seemed to like the field trip.

A thought for this holiday season-

Every year we spend so much time rushing around trying to find that perfect gift for all the special people in our lives. We shop, internet surf and worry that we won’t be able to please everyone. Instead take a moment- sit back, take a deep breath and look at what is really important. Many years from now (or even months) those people won’t remember what you gave them. That gift will probably be long used up, broken or thrown in the trash. But they will always remember what you did for them. This year, try something new. Instead of buying a toy, candy, sweater or soap-on-a rope; give the gift of exciting memories instead. Take that special person out for a fun day at the movies, theme park or a Hollywood Tour. Or buy a gift certificate for something unusual like sky-diving, driving a race car, flying a plane simulator or horsemanship lessons. If they live far away, buy yourself a plane ticket and go visit them. Better yet- buy them a plane ticket so they can visit you!

The most important thing is to give wonderful adventures, not things. You will be well remembered if you give memories. Isn’t that the best thing we can hope for out of this life, to be well remembered? We here at CRK Training Stable sincerely wish you the happiest of holidays this season. Now go out and make some fantastic memories!

equestfestlogo 2014EQUESFEST-

December Group Make-up Lessons~

December make-up group lessons will be held on Sunday, December 28 at 9:30 and 11:00 am. If a group lesson was cancelled in December due to weather issues, you will be enrolled in this make-up lesson automatically.  This will be reflected on your January statement that should arrive in late December. If you missed a lesson, you must ask to ride in this lesson.

Rider Evaluations & Written Tests~

All riders will be given written riding evaluations the week of January 25-30, 2015. These evaluations will take place during the normal lesson time. Once you pass your level’s riding test, you may sign up to take the written and practical tests. Written and Practical tests will be given on Sunday, January 31 at 2:00 PM. Riders who pass all 3 tests will receive their certificate and patch and move on to the next level. Remember if you miss this evaluation week, you may request a riding evaluation at any time. Good Luck!

What Do You Want For Christmas?

A poem sent to Dear Appy(Abby?)from a couple who have too much stuff.

So many of you asked us (since Yuletide’s drawing near)

“What do you want for Christmas? What can we give you this year?”

If we say, “We want nothing!” you buy something anyway.

So here’s a list of what we’d like; believe now what we say:

Pajamas for a little child, food to feed the poor.

Blankets for a shelter, and we ask a little bit more-

Perform good deeds and let us know, or volunteer your time.

These last are worth a fortune, and they needn’t cost a dime.

We have to many thing now, vases, candles, CD’s and clocks.

We have our fill of ties, underwear and socks.

Candy is too fattening, crossword books we’ve more than 20.

We don’t need trays or plates or cups, and knickknacks we have plenty.

We’ve no wall to hang more pictures; we have books we’ve not yet read; So please take what you’d spend on us and help the poor instead!

Just send a Christmas card to us and tell us what you’ve done;

We’ll open them on Christmas Day and read them one by one.

It won’t cost as much for postage as a package sent would do.

You’ll need no wrapping paper, ribbons, ink or glue.

And we’ll thank God you listened to what we had to say.

So we could be the instruments to help someone this way!

Holiday Season Lessons~

As the busy holiday season comes upon us, please keep in mind CRK Training Stable Policy regarding lesson cancellations. We are happy to reschedule your lesson if given appropriate notice. Group lesson make-ups will be held on the last Sunday of the month or the first Sunday of the following month. Group make-up lessons are limited to one per month.

No Refunds, credits or discounts will be given for lessons cancelled by clients. Cancelled lessons must be rescheduled or you may take a vacation credit if available.

Cancelling & Rescheduling Lessons
In the event that a rider is unable to attend a scheduled lesson, notice must be given at least twenty-four (24) hours prior to the start time of the lesson in order to reschedule it. Cancellation messages may be left on the office answering machine, texted or emailed. You must contact us to reschedule your lesson. One reschedule is allowed per lesson. If you cancel your rescheduled lesson, you forfeit that lesson. No more than two replacement lesson days and times will be offered. If you decline both, you forfeit that lesson. You may reschedule only one lesson per month. The replacement lesson must be scheduled within 30 days of the cancelled lesson or the lesson will be forfeited. We will make every attempt to reschedule lessons, but do not guarantee that everyone’s schedule can be accommodated. Make-up lessons must be on a different day of the week and may be with a different instructor or horse.

No show-  No-shows will be charged as if the lesson was given. A No Show is considered to be: A rider who does not attend a scheduled lesson within 20 minutes of the start time, without proper cancellation notice being given. Riders who are more than 20 minutes late, without notice, may be denied a lesson and will not be given a make-up lesson.

Vacation Credit- Students who have been at CRK Stable for more than 4 months may take 4 weeks of vacation credit annually, based on the calendar year. During the month of your vacation your account will be credited for the number of lessons missed. Lesson spaces will be held for students during vacation breaks. Vacation credits will not be granted over the phone. All vacation requests must be made by email or in writing at least 30 days in advance of the vacation to allow for proper billing. Late vacation credit requests will be subject to a $20.00 re-billing fee.

Time To Ride Open House Events~

Our open house events went wonderfully! We introduced over 220 newcomers to our equestrian lifestyle. They enjoyed a class all about horses, a scavenger hunt, petting zoo and free riding lessons! We greatly exceeded the “100 in 100 days” goal set by the creators of the contest and we won 6th place nationwide in our division! We have yet to know what exactly we have won due to tax paperwork. The American horse council has promised that the prize boxes will be shipped very soon.

Several riders used the discount coupon offered to begin their equestrian adventure. Many have now made the move up to group lessons and are making good progress there. Several more have moved up the skill list and while not changing to group lessons, they have accomplished many of the level one skills already. Congrats and welcome to- Sunny, Cynthia, Kim, Nevaeh, Emily, and Annabelle.

 Congratulations~

Congratulations to our newly certified instructor, Athena Fosnight! Athena received her Certified Horsemanship Association Certification in English flat, English jumping and Western! Way To Go Athena!!!

 Weather or Not~

It’s that time of year again! Winter is soon to be upon us with all that it entails weather wise. Here is a reminder of how things work when the wind howls or the rain pours down. Even if you think you know our policy, please take a moment to read this again. Thank You!

Please read this section carefully. Many clients have mis-understood this policy and been disappointed or downright angry when a lesson was not available to them.    If a previously cancelled lesson is the only lesson you have that month, call to re-schedule it. If you don’t pay for the entire new month prior to that month, your regular lesson time will not be held even if you have a make-up lesson.

Example- Your lessons for January are on Tuesdays at 3:30. Tuesday, January 20th was rained out therefore; the lesson was cancelled. You now have a one lesson credit of $56.00 toward February’s lessons and the statement will reflect this difference. If you choose not to continue taking lessons in February, you must schedule a make-up lesson for the missed lesson. If you arrive at the stable on Tuesday, Feb. 3rd at 3:30 expecting to ride, the lesson time will not be available and may have been given to another student. You must schedule a make-up lesson on a different day. We do not offer refunds for missed lessons. You must make them up.
Credits for weather cancelled lessons must be used within 30 days. Accounts with credits not used will be deleted after that time, so please plan accordingly. See the lesson policy for more details on make-up lessons.

 INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY

Do not assume lessons will be cancelled without calling. You will be charged for “No-shows”

No Refunds! Credit for future lessons will be given in the event of weather cancellations or you may re-schedule your lesson. If you cancel a lesson without proper notice due to the possibility of bad weather, you will be charged for the lesson. CRK Training Stable will not contact you if lessons are cancelled due to bad weather. You must call and check the answering machine at (714) 693-4886 for a lesson cancellation. If no cancellation message is on the machine, lessons will run as scheduled. We reserve the right to substitute un-mounted lessons should weather or arena conditions prevent riding. Un-mounted group lessons will be one hour only. Messages will not be available until after 8:00 A.M., so please call after that time. Please do not call or text the cell phone without checking the answering machine first.

Rain- If it has rained within the past 4 days, please call for a message regarding lessons. If it looks like rain, but has not rained yet, plan to attend your lesson.
Wind- During “Santa Ana” wind conditions, lessons may be cancelled. Please call for a message regarding lessons. Keep in mind that wind conditions change rapidly, so call often.
Heat- Lesson will run as usual during hot days so bring a water bottle, wear your sunscreen and bring a hat to wear while grooming.
